I downloaded the song last week because my big sister always played
it when I was a kid. Last week, as I listened to it with my wife she
asked, "What does it mean?" and I pursued it, which led me here.
Thanks for the insight,
Joe

This has been my first experience reading the possible meanings of "American
Pie". It has been the most wonderfully, fulfilling, and learning experience,
with a walk back in time than I have had in many years.
The one part; "From this the state of God's health started being debated in the New York Times, Daily News, sermons, talk shows, theological journals & even bumper stickers!"; hit home for me.... I remember as a child my father having a bumper sticker, and also preaching a sermon entitled "My God is Alive and Well... sorry to hear about yours.
Thank you for an enjoying afternoon of reading!

As a high school teacher teaching a class on 1950's and 1960's
US culture, with an emphasis on the beginnings and changes in rock
and roll, this song plays a big part. Your site does a great job in
creating debate points about what Mr. McLean really meant. Thank you.

Since the first time I heard this song, it has traveled with me.
I lived the lyrics as a young fan of rock and roll and it is those
lyrics--wherever I may be and hear the song, where it takes me back
and through those years. American Pie will always have that special
place in my heart.

a fine piece of research. I had always wondered about the lyrics.
And about you, it is great to see someone so open to possibilities
who doesn't impose his believes and exposes everything. I am really
impressed and will use your material when I play the song to my students,
for them to fully understand it.
